This mesmerizing portrait of a proud man who, through three decades and successive repressive regimes, heroically braved persecution to bring books to the people of Kabul has elicited extraordinary praise throughout the world and become a phenomenal international bestseller. The Bookseller of Kabul is startling in its intimacy and its details - a revelation of the plight of Afghan women and a window into the surprising realities of daily life in today's Afghanistan.

I found this book very interesting because of the insight into the life of Afgans and in particular the women. The Bookseller, Sultan Khan, is a complex and interesting man although he has many qualities that I dislike. But understanding Sultan Khan's background and culture, his thoughts and behavior are not surprising.

I was left with great admiration of the journalistic skills of the author, Asne Seierstad. Since I read an English translation, I did wonder about some very American expressions that were used in the book.

I plan on following up on another thought from the book and that is the relationship of the Soviet Union's struggles in Afganistan and the end of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union. It might be another example of the power of guerilla warfare.

I liked this book. It is a glimpse into the lives of a bookseller in Kabul, Afghanistan and his family. I am always fascinated by the plight of women in such a harsh and closed society. It makes me thankful to have the choices I do.
