Hey BBers!
We are so excited to be heading into summer! It is time for what we call "lazy reading" - no hurries, no worries, just easy reading! What could be better than that? We'll even help make your book club planning lazy too!
If your book club is looking for a great lazy reading experience, try a "Potluck and Potbook" (no nothing illegal). Normally with our book club get-togethers the host supplies dinner and the book choice, but with a "Potluck and Potbook" it works a little different. Why? Well:
1. It's a Potluck (Preparing a meal for over six couldn't get much easier than that.)
2. It's Potbook - With a potbook, each of us brings a possible book choice. We will choose from "the pot" for the next month's read. So no pressure on the host to weed through all the summer reading lists on their own. (It's also a great way to create your personal summer reading list too with all the choices!)
As you are gathering up books for your potbook, don't miss our June BB Book Pick, "Farsighted" by Emlyn Chand. "Farsighted" was voted our 2012 BB "The Book Pick" contest winner and hence the June book choice! Congratulations Emlyn!! Join us in reading it and share your review! Please also note that Emlyn Chand is a big supporter of Seedlings.org, our literacy spotlight below, with a portion of her "Farsighted" proceeds to be donated to this wonderful charity.
Reading our potbooks and getting high on life,

Farsighted
By Emlyn Chand
Alex's life has never been easy. The only other student who will talk to him is the school bully, his parents are dead-broke and insanely overprotective, and to complicate matters even more, he's blind. Just when he thinks he'll never have a shot at a normal life, a new girl from India moves into town. Simmi is smart, nice, and actually wants to be friends with Alex. Plus she smells like an Almond Joy bar. Yes, sophomore year might not be so bad after all.
Unfortunately, Alex is in store for another new arrival--an unexpected and often embarrassing ability to "see" the future. Try as he may, Alex is unable to ignore his visions, especially when they begin to suggest that Simmi is in danger. With the help of the mysterious psychic next door and new friends who come bearing gifts of their own, Alex must embark on a journey to change his future.

Literacy News:

In 1984 when Debra Bonde founded Seedlings, braille materials were scarce and expensive. Her goals were to increase the availability and lower the cost of braille books for children in order to promote their literacy skills and the love of reading. In 1985, the first year of book production, Debra made 221 books in her basement office. By 1990, Seedlings was producing 5,000 books per year, which precipitated its move out of Debra's basement and into the Bentley Center in Livonia, Michigan, and eventually to our present location on Farmington Road in Livonia. In 2011, with a small staff, and a group of loyal volunteers, Seedlings produced over 21,000 braille books and articles, with a grand total of 345,000 since 1984, equaling over 16 million pages of braille!
In 1994, Seedlings added The Rose Project, which provides encyclopedia articles in braille for student's projects and reports. The Rose Project has become a very popular resource for students eager to work independently. We anticipate requests for approximately 500 articles per year. Thanks to generous donations from our supporters, this service is entirely free to visually impaired students in grades 1-12.

Don't miss our
Interview with Author Emlyn Chand
10. Where did the inspiration for your book come from?
Everything started with a single image—my face in these tacky oversized sunglasses reflecting out at me from the car’s side mirror. I was daydreaming while my husband drove us across Michigan for my sister’s wedding. Something about my image really struck me in an almost horrific way. I felt the glasses made me look blind but found it so weird that there was still a clear image within them; it seemed so contradictory. At the time...
