Light read, self absorbed...but I guess that is the point.

Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World
Date Posted: 5/26/2009 | Go To Book Page

This book will make you want to do something great to help humanity, and it will make you realize how little energy you do have. Based on the true story of Dr. Paul Farmer...a man who would cure the world.

My Sister's Keeper: A Novel
Date Posted: 5/26/2009 | Go To Book Page

A good work of fiction, one that you could easily see becoming reality. The story is based on a child who is conceived for the pure act of helping her sister fight leukemia as a bone marrow transplant. Anna breaks my heart.

People of the Book: A Novel
Date Posted: 5/26/2009 | Go To Book Page

This book as about the conservation of one of the earliest illustrated Jewish volumes of the Sarajevo Haggadah...and history is revealed by the tiny artifacts concealed within. The story is both factual and fiction...and engrossing to say the least. I would read it again.

The Bonesetter's Daughter: A Novel (Ballantine Reader's Circle)

This book is about a tumultuous mother daughter relationship...it begins to iron out as the daughter reads the writings of her mother and begins to understand the secrets of her life. Another good Amy Tan.

The Bookseller of Kabul

I liked this book. It is a glimpse into the lives of a bookseller in Kabul, Afghanistan and his family. I am always fascinated by the plight of women in such a harsh and closed society. It makes me thankful to have the choices I do.

The Double Bind (Vintage Contemporaries)

Suspenseful...a look at the way our mind plays tricks on us when it has been traumatized. A twist at the end that will make you go, ?

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

I loved this book. This book is set in Guernsey, the British island once occupied during the Nazi occupation...once again I am reading about it. It is presented in an unsual way...each chapter is set up as an exchange of written letters. The characters come so alive that you think they are friends...and you just want to go visit. I couldn't put it down...fast read.

The Kite Runner

This book is gripping and powerful...life and struggles in modern Afghanistan. It is a bit raw and hard to read in places, but I couldn't put it down. The men might like this one.

The Mermaid Chair

Sue Monk Kidd wrote The Secret Life of Bees, which I have read...so, if you like her writing you will like this one too. This story is more intense and mature than "Bees", a good story of Jessie Sullivan and her journey to self.

The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story
Date Posted: 5/28/2009 | Go To Book Page

This book is about the wife of a zookeeper in Warsaw, Poland during the nazi occupation. It is based on a true story of survival. Antonina and her husband Jan saved more than 300 people in an elaborate underground system within the zoo walls. I like the book and although I have not read any of her other books, I am now compelled to do so.

Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time
Date Posted: 8/17/2009 | Go To Book Page

The dedication that Greg Mortenson has for educating children in Pakistan and Afghanistan is remarkable. If he doesn't win a Nobel Peace Prize it will be a shame. This book made me examine how fortunate I am and reflect on how little I need. I have a renewed interest in making a difference in my little part of the world. I don't want to put this book on the shelf, lest I forget. Everyone should read this book.
