A Deadly Dealer (Collectible Mystery)
Date Posted: 7/6/2010 | Go To Book Page

Third in this series. This murder mystery is set in an antiques show in Nashville. The murder weapon is a walking cane with a hidden blade. The history of the blade is interspersed throughout the current story. At the end of the book is an interesting article about walking canes with secret compartments and pictures of examples of these canes.

The character of Molly Appleby is better developed in this book. I am still surprised that someone as kind as Molly is the daughter of Clara. She seems to have quite a hard edge to her.

I emailed the author to see if she was planning on writing more in the series. Jennifer Stanley replied, "Sadly, that series was cancelled due to lack of sales. I now write the supper club series as JB Stanley, the Hope Street series as Jennifer Stanley, and my new Books By the Bay series as Ellery Adams."

A Deadly Yarn (A Knitting Mystery)
Date Posted: 7/30/2010 | Go To Book Page

I enjoyed this #3 book in the Knitting Mystery series. The characters are developing well. This book centered around wearable art from fibers. There is a recipe for Chiles Rellenos and the pattern for a simple shawl at the end of the book. The advice for beginning knitters has been progressing through the series. The patterns would be quite helpful if you are learning to knit.

Lambspun of Colorado, are yarn shop situated in Ft. Collins, supplied the knitting patters for this series so-far. Their website is http://www.lambspun.com/

Enjoyed this cozy mystery. It is #2 of a series and I intend to read the first in the series. I had already read a later book in the series and missed the character development. I think if I read the first book in the series I might end up reading many more in the series.

A Fatal Appraisal (Collectible Mystery)
Date Posted: 6/13/2010 | Go To Book Page

I enjoyed this cozy mystery with the main character being a writer for an antique collectors newspaper. It did bother me when in the secondary story about a desk made during the Revolutionary War the maker is talking about a hidden compartment to hide photographs. Photography was not invented until the 1800s. The black and white photographs in my paperback copy of the book were not clear enough to tell much. I do plan on reading the next book in the series.

A Killer Plot (A Books by the Bay Mystery)
Date Posted: 8/7/2010 | Go To Book Page

First in new series.

This is a good book for the beginning of a series. A reader would be disappointed if they only intended to read just this book. The characters are well developed. I was left with numerous questions at the end of the book about how Olivia, the main character, would proceed with her life. I thought we should sit down for a cup of coffee and have a talk about the available choices for future romance for her. She should focus on that police chief!  Olivia's black standard poodle, Haviland, provides the comic relief to Olivia's restrained emotions.

For readers who are also writers, or want to be writers, the discussions of the craft of writing are well interwoven in the book.

The author's website is: elleryadamsmysteries.com. The website has nice pictures of the North Carolina coast and cute pictures of a black poodle. I have read other books by this author when she writes as J.B. Stanley. They were a series about antique collecting.

Angelology: A Novel

I have mixed feelings about this book. It was off to a slow start. I feel that too many things were unexplained or too quickly explained. I was more than half way through the book before the background ended and the story reall began. I don't always mind that in a book but this time I did. The existence of the Nephilim left too many questions unanswered for me. If there are so many of them in powerful positions, shouldn't they be more noticible? They don't look or act like 100% humans. People should notice that. The book did lead me to contemplate the nature of good and evil. But, more often I contemplated the lack of understanding of the motivation of many characters, how much the author was writing for selling movie rights, and how would it end so that I would buy the next book in the series.

I have read the first two in the series. this was supposed to be the last the the series but I believe that the author has now written a prequel. I'll have to read that first. So far I like the book---not too much of that superpower stuff which I think could be left out but then the teens and tweens like it. I am giving this a "Mildly." I found the tribe powers to be unnecessary and it seemed like the author went to a lot of trouble to be sure that she could write more n the series now that they have been successful. The religious and war vs. peace introspection seemed forced too. But still a fun read. I'll end up reading #4 in the series (that was first to just be 3) and the prequel too

I can barely give this 1 star--I did like two sections that were classroom humor but the rest was a waste of my time except it did prove to me that I don't want to read any other of his books. The characters are mad, sad, angry, or drunk or various combinations. The worst part was Klosterman's constant inclusion of pop culture. ---I read in other reviews that the readers were so surprised by the ending----I disagree. Since the rest of the book was trite, then so was the ending. It was something a highschool freshman would write when they didn't know how to end something in Creative Writing class. I admit I was mildly amused the first 30 pages---but the same joke just kept up. Enough already---Chuck just write a short story. This is another case where I kept reading just because I wanted to be able to write a review.

The settings and seasons fit the emotional mood of the book. I read only 42 out of 451 pages. The author tells of his life when his wife gets breast cancer and later when his sister goes through a divorce with an abusive husband. I stopped reading when he told his wife, " . . . you know you chose to have this tumor." This apparently had to do with something in a past life that she needed to resolve or learn from. Cancer is bad enough. I just can't believe that someone should feel guilty about it. Bad things just happen and we humans often learn from them.

Cancer was not a choice for the author's wife. But, his choice to invest has money into NASDAQ stocks shortly before the market crash was his choice. There is a big difference in the two situations.

This book is a well written collection of short stories centering around the theme of lonliness and human connection. The stories are set in or connected to Crosby, Maine and the character Olive Kitteridge, an outspoken and often grumpy retired teacher. Well, actually, some of the stories only briefly mention Olive. Some readers might find Olive to be unpleasant, but I like her honesty and acts of love and kindness. She struggles with her relationship with her adult son and with her widowhood which gives us insight into her at times uneven but very human personality. I like novels and usually I don't particularly like short stories. I suppose this is because I like lots of details so I really understand characters in stories. Sometimes I felt like the brief references to Olive in a couple of stories were just there so they could be included in this book.

Sam feels that the Bible and Christianity has given him the truth. However, he seems to be seeking his true destiny.

I was touched by the affection and patience shown by Sam toward his Father who is a distant and distracted man. As always I enjoy an unexpected romance between two seemly very different people. The Christian theme in the book was not forced or simplistic. The book is gently humerous and shows insight into human nature.

Pray for Silence: A Thriller (Kate Burkholder)

I listened to the audio book of the first in this series. Police Chief Kate Burkholder is an interesting and complex person. I can tell that her relationship with John Tomasetti will go up and down and on and off in further books in the series. There were many things that were hard to determine if they were red herrings or if they would eventually tie into the crime.

Several times I wanted to point out to Burkholder to follow up on certain clues and to look at someone as a suspect. I was right in several instances but made the same erroneous assumptions as Burkholder that brought about the suspenseful ending.

Many of the details in this book are gruesome and heart wrenching. I don't know enough to determine if Castillo's details about Amish life are accurate, but they appear to be. Chief Burkholder is a part of both the English and the Amish worlds. Her conflicting emotions and ongoing personal struggles make her a more believable character.

Snakewoman of Little Egypt: A Novel
Date Posted: 12/26/2010 | Go To Book Page

I am going to list this as one of the best books I have read in 2010. One of the main reasons is because it got me thinking about a number of different things and concepts. Hellenga does a good job of describing the geographic setting and the characters. I could tell at the beginning of the book that Prof. Jackson Jones would not be satisfied with his life back teaching at a midwestern university because he left his life in Africa among the Mbuti. He did not leave there voluntarily. He was an anthropology professor who "went native." Therefore, I was not surprised that although he approached the snake-handling church like an anthropologist, he soon changed to a participant from scientific observer.

I also could tell that he an Sunny, a young woman just released from prison, would be on a collision course. She was a young and vulnerable appearing woman. But, even more importantly, she is viewed by Jackson and another professor, Claire, as an empty slate and they are both ready to capture and shape Sunny's view of the world.

It was helpful to me to go onto youtube.com and watch some of the videos that show actual services snakehandling churches and interviews with church members.

I was left with great admiration of the journalistic skills of the author, Asne Seierstad. Since I read an English translation, I did wonder about some very American expressions that were used in the book.

I plan on following up on another thought from the book and that is the relationship of the Soviet Union's struggles in Afganistan and the end of the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union. It might be another example of the power of guerilla warfare.

At first when I received The Reckoning, I saw that it was only about 222 pages. I was concerned that the characters would not be very well developed. I was certainly wrong about that. This is a coming of age book for both father and son. Father's maturing process comes too late. Additionally, both father and son are grieving the loss of wife/mother. The teenage Jake is not getting much help from his father in this arena. George, the father, is also dealing with the selling of his business that has been owned for several generations and defined the men of the family.

Then George's old college buddy, Freeman Hawks, appears on the scene asking for sanctuary for some unrevealed reason. Freeman chose to leave the US and live in Canada during the Vietnam War era. George chose a fraternity and taking over the management of the family business. George still feels conflicts over the choices he made. He still idealizes his friend/hero, Freeman Hawks. Who really is this Freeman Hawks? Jake, being a normal questioning teenager, is not willing to unquestioningly adopt his father's perception of Hawks.

The title of this book is very important. I went from seeing it applicable as the numerical problem solving and counting to see that the choices in life we make will lead us eventually to a bill we must pay for the amount due.

I have not made up my mind yet if Hildegard is too modern a woman to be placed in this setting. She faces many conflicts both external and internal. I am also puzzled about why Hildegard is sent on her long journey to obtain the cross of Constantine. There was a short glossary at the end of the book which was somewhat helpful, but I needed to look the meaning of several words to enhance my enjoyment of reading this story. However, most of the important Medieval terminology was somewhat understandable from the context. Reading this book also sent me to review this period of European history.

The "Glossary of Selected Terms" at the end of the book listing the literary slang used by characters in the book is helpful and amusing but eventually brought me to the feeling that I would not want to be stuck at some cocktail party with a bunch of self-absorbed phonies like the characters in the book.
