Book Description
Among Us Women is about three women of different ages and ethnicity who have in common a career in interior design. Borrowing from client and associate interactions, the author who has an insiders knowledge of the interior design business, weaves a suspenseful plot relieved by descriptions of lush interiors and wry humor. The novel is set in the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties and explores many issues that still persist--women's empowerment, abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia--all provocative issues. On opposite sides of the abortion issue, the characters become embroiled in a controversy that leads to a devastating event. Fine intentions propel the women into choices with some disastrous consequences. Rose, a grandmother, is despondent over the suicide of her husband and seeks comfort with a questionable preacher, going farther with him than she should. Jane is reeling from shock when her husband leaves her for a male lover. And then there's Eva, an African American interior designer, retained to design a women's health clinic, who marries one of the abortion providers and unwittingly becomes entangled in a web of intrigue. As an example of the timeliness of the work, a chapter is devoted to the "Summer of Mercy" protests in Kansas in 1991 and a scene occurs at the clinic of the recently murdered Dr. George Tiller who was targeted there.

"Joan Lerner weaves a delicately touching and fascinating tapestry of three women's lives in AMONG US WOMEN. Rose Miller is widowed and left to deal with the ghosts of her husband's explosive temper versus the perpetual guilt of surviving him.  In her need for love and attention, she turns to the church, intent on reestablishing her religious belief.  But that intent is manipulated into misplaced trust, when Rose's admiration for her minister results in her supporting terrorist-type activities in the guise of anti-abortion efforts.  Jane Avery is an annoyingly prim and proper designer, whose perfect world is shattered when her gay husband announces his decision to leave and pursue life and love as an open homosexual.  Eva Andrews is an African American woman raised by a decidedly feminist and activist black mother and white father; she is also a designer and is deeply in love with a married man. AMONG US WOMEN offers a gripping and well developed story as each character is shaped by life's unexpected events and inadvertently causes another pain."

"There's no filter on Joan Lerner's angry, grieving, hopeful heroine.  Her emotions bubble just beneath the surface and regularly boil over.  Among Us Women is a sometimes wondrous, often painful labor of love." Stewart O'Nan, author of Songs for the Missing.

"Plotting reminiscent of Susan Isaacs...with the extras of lush interiors, savvy design tips and elegant meal presentations.  Lerner confronts controversial topics in her debut novel but she lightens the mood with eye candy." Linda Ellis, author of Death at a Dumpster.

"Joan Lerner tackles some tough women's issues in her new novel Among Us Women.  The three women a who share the novel's pages are very different but hold common ground with which most of us can identify and relate.  The author's insight is compelling and her conclusions thought-provoking.  I liked it; you will too." Jean Kelcher, author of Backstage at the White House.

"The well written storyline is inspiring without preaching...Readers who enjoy an uplifting character study will appreciate the tale of three women finding a connection to one another through their joy of interior design."  Harriet Klausner, MidWest Reviews, Genre Go Round, Book Review.com, Amazon.com

"Among Us Women is a novel that invites its readers to contemplate different ways of thinking, feeling and acting on issues that may or may not ever touch one's personal life...The bulk of the story will touch everyone in some very large and small ways.  A relevant work for the times and nicely done, Ms. Lerner."  Crystal Reviews

"As you learn about each of the character's lives and begin to see how they overlap, you are riveted to read further.  The story is fast moving and engrossing, drawing you into it, chapter after chapter.  Don't miss this one!" Lisa Jones, The Printed Word Book Review.

Excerpt from Chapter One - Among Us Women by Joan Lerner

ABOUT ROSE MILLER -- 1987

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My husband's untimely death should have signaled my empowerment, but new influences disordered my life.

Ted was an agnostic Jew, one who felt duty bound to maintain traditions of the faith. We always had a Passover Sedar and lit Chanukah candles. I thought he'd want a Jewish burial for his last resting place. Being a lapsed Catholic, I hadn't a clue what to do. My friend, Sara Goldberg, helped me. Jews are buried as soon as possible and she found a Reform Rabbi to officiate despite the questionable circumstances of his death. Putting aside my misgivings, I arranged Ted's interment in a non-sectarian cemetery. Everyone assumes I'll join him there some day. Fat chance.

Every day with Ted was a trial, his tirades so bruising they filled me with dread as I awaited the next attack. I have no intention of spending eternity with him.

Today is the funeral. What to wear? I don't even own a black dress. I pull open the closet door and am jolted by Ted's suits, shirts and ties all lined up ready to pounce.

Ted, you're dead. I can talk to you without fear of retribution. No more outbursts like the time you ripped up the newspaper and threatened to shove it down my throat. And when Polly told us she was going to have an abortion. You flew into a rage and grabbed Devon's collar and told him you'd kill him if he didn't marry her. Did their shot-gun wedding bring on your final bout of despair?

Oh my God, Ted, I never imagined you'd kill yourself!
